Alessandra Ambrosio

Alessandra Corine Ambrósio (born April 11, 1981) is a Brazilian supermodel. Her last name is spelled Ambrósio, but the diacritic mark is omitted in her modeling work. It is often spelt ‘Ambrosia’ in English for the purpose of creating a pun. She was described by retired supermodel Tyra Banks as “The future of the modeling world”. She is best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret and was chosen as their first spokesmodel for Victoria’s Secret PINK line. She is currently one of Victoria’s Secret Angels and the face for the UK company Next. Aside from modeling work, she represents as the National Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Ambrosio was also selected by AskMen.com as Number 2 out of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women for 2008.

Early life

Ambrosio was born in a small town of Erechim, Brazil on April 11, 1981 to petrol station-owner parents. She is of Italian and Polish descent. She was just eight years old when she decided she wanted to be a model, after seeing a picture of top covergirl Karen Mulder in a magazine. “I wanted to be like her,” she recalls. However, she felt insecure about her appearance, particularly of her large, obvious ears. So at 11, she had cosmetic surgery done to get her ears pinned back. Unfortunately, she had complications from the surgery for the two years following. In 2006 on The Tyra Banks Show, she admitted that the surgery had been a bad experience for her and that she is discouraged from having plastic surgery again. She also has a sister named Aline Ambrosio, who does not model and cousin named Samantha, who also models.

Modeling career

When Ambrosio was 12 years old, she enrolled in modeling classes then, began modeling for Dilson Stein at age 15. Winning Brazil’s Elite Model Look started her modeling career. Her first big modeling job was the cover of the Brazilian Elle magazine. Elite passed along some of her Polaroids to Guess which led her to do the Millennium GUESS? campaign along with her friend and fellow Brazilian supermodel Ana Beatriz Barros. She has since been in huge demand, working with big-name brands including Revlon, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Rolex, Oscar de la Renta, Gucci, Escada, Rocco Barocco, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, as well as the famed Pirelli Calendar. As for fashion shows, she has walked the catwalks for designers such as Laura Biagiotti, Christian Lacroix, Byblos, Fendi, Issey Miyake, Kenzo, Christian Dior, Nicole Miller, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Vivienne Westwood, Oscar de la Renta, among others. She appeared in over 50 international magazine covers such as Cosmopolitan, ELLE, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Ocean Drive, Vogue and the only model to appear on the cover of Glamour in the USA in 2006.

In 2004, Ambrosio launched her line of swimwear called Alessandra Ambrosio by Sais, a division of Rosa Cha. It sold 10,000 units in only its first month on the market.

Her best knowns collaboration is with American lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. She appeared on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for the first time in 2000, and continues to be a participant in the subsequent shows. Her most notable walk down the runway was in 2005 wearing lingerie made entirely out of candy. In 2004, she was selected as the first spokesmodel for Victoria’s Secret PINK line. She is currently a contract ‘Angel’ and spokesmodel for Victoria’s Secret. Her ‘Angel’ status has brought her to the public’s attention being cited by the popular media as one of the world’s sexiest women. She was chosen as one of People magazine’s annual 100 Most Beautiful People in the World, in May 2007 along with fellow ‘Angels’ Ambrosio is among the world’s top-earning models.

Ambrosio is currently the face for the UK company Next. Ambrosio stars in Next’s first television campaign in 12 years. She is also signed to Storm Model Management in London.

Personal life

Ambrosio loves surfing, seeing bands, drinking caipirinha and eating chocolates, which she admits to indulging in every day. She is very conscious of her figure and works out with her Brazilian trainer doing the Brazilian Butt Lift, which is a mix of samba, capoeira and aerobics.

When Ambrosio first came to New York, Gisele Bündchen lent her apartment for two weeks and Adriana Lima helped her translate English.

She described her typical week as jetsetting from one country to another for photo shoots and in between she has some phone interviews. She still visits her family in Brazil regularly and calls Erechim, Brazil her favorite place in the world and having traveled the world has not yet convinced her otherwise. These days, she shares a New York City apartment with her lawyer sister Aline.

She is best friends with Ana Beatriz Barros.

Ambrosio officially announced on her website that she is expecting her first child, a girl, with her boyfriend Jamie Mazur, in August.

Moon Geun-young

Moon Geun-young

Moon Geun-young (b. May 6, 1987), through a combination of excellent acting skills and a sweet, innocent-looking manner, became a superstar in Korea long before she turned twenty. Moon first started modeling at the age of 12, and then in 2000 appeared in the docu-drama On the Road by artist Choi Jae-eun. That same year she appeared as the younger Song Hye-gyo in the hugely successful TV drama Autumn Fairy Tale, which was exported throughout Asia. She then played the younger version of Lee Mi-yeon’s character in the KBS drama The Last Empress.

Moon Geun-young

Moon’s first appearance in a film was in a supporting role as Cha Tae-hyun’s younger sister in Lovers Concerto (2002). It would be the following year that she would be launched as a major star, however, with her role in Kim Jee-woon’s successful horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. Together with fellow actress Im Soo-jung, Moon captured the attention of legions of fans, from teenage girls on up.

Her subsequent appearances have given her a reputation as being one of Korea’s few (only?) genuine box office draws, who can sell millions of tickets even in a bad film. Although My Little Bride (2004), in which she co-starred with Kim Rae-won, was considered an entertaining commercial comedy (which sold three million tickets), Moon was given the entire credit for the two million tickets sold by her subsequent film, the poorly-constructed ballroom dance film Innocent Steps.

Ha Ji-won

Ha Ji-won (b. June 28, 1979) made her television debut in 1997 on KBS TV. She won a Grand Bell award as the Best New Actress of 2000 with her debut film Truth or Dare, and a Blue Dragon award for Best Supporting Actress with her second film, the popular melodrama Ditto (2000). After achieving wider public recognition as a “horror queen” for her roles in Ahn Sung-ki’s films A Nightmare and Phone, she has branched out into a variety of roles such as that of a cheerleader in Sex is Zero, which was one of most successful comedies of the year 2002.

Thanks to the huge success of her TV drama, Damo in which she starred as a female detective in the Chosun Dynasty and Something That Happened in Bali in which she played a poor girl who was loved by two rich men played by Jo In-sung and So Ji-seop, she gained a reputation as an A-list actress. Her subsequent roles in three comedies — Reversal of Fortune, 100 Days With Mr. Arrogant, and Love, So Divine — were not as successful with audiences, however. In early 2005 she starred in the melodrama Daddy-Long-Legs, based on a famous novel by Jean Webster.

Ha’s next role saw her once again play a Chosun-era female detective, this time in acclaimed director Lee Myung-Se’s Duelist. Probably her highest-profile role to date, the film sees her teams up with Ahn Sung-ki to catch an elusive criminal played by Kang Dong-won.

Lee Eun-ju

Lee Eun-ju

Lee Eun-ju (b. Dec. 22, 1980) studied piano for much of her youth, without giving much thought to becoming an actress. After finding work as a model, however, she began to be offered roles in various TV dramas, including Start and KAIST. Her film debut came in 1999, when she played the younger sister in Park Chong-wan’s award-winning feature Rainbow Trout. Her first lead role came as the title character in acclaimed director Hong Sang-soo’s Virgin Stripped Bare by her Bachelors (2000), where she gave one of the most memorable performances in all of Hong’s films. Following this, she teamed with actor Lee Byung-heon (JSA) in the 2001 hit film Bungee Jumping of Their Own, and also scored a hit opposite Cha Tae-hyun in the melodrama Lovers’ Concerto.

Lee’s later career was marked by several turns in films that failed at the box-office, plus a key role in the record-breaking Korean War film Taegukgi. In late 2004 she starred in her last feature, Daniel H. Byun’s The Scarlet Letter which screened as the Closing Film at the 2004 Pusan International Film Festival.

Tragically, Lee committed suicide on February 22, 2005 after suffering from depression for over a year. The news of her death prompted a massive outpouring of grief from fellow actors and filmmakers. Lee will be remembered for her talent, intelligence and passion that made her stand out among the actresses of her generation.

Interview Excerpts:

“I’m called a new generation star, but I don’t want to be the kind of person who achieves instant fame and then is quickly forgotten. I want to learn step-by-step how to become a good actress, and gradually work my way up. A star achieves brilliance, but is soon forgotten; to become an actress takes more time.” [Kino, #60, February 2000]

- Death
On the night of February 22, 2005, only a few days after her graduation from Dankook University, Lee committed suicide at her apartment in Bundang, Seongnam. She was 24 years old. She attempted to slit her wrists and hanged herself. The family blamed the suicide on severe bouts of depression and mental illness, and said she had been suffering from insomnia due to the nude scenes she had done in The Scarlet Letter.

She left a suicide note scrawled in blood, in which she wrote, “Mom, I am sorry and I love you.” A separate note said, “I wanted to do too much. Even though I live, I’m not really alive. I don’t want anyone to be disappointed. It’s nice having money… I wanted to make money.”

Lee Eun-ju was cremated and enshrined in a crypt at Goyang. Hundreds of her fellow actors and entertainers attended her funeral. Vocalist Bada sang “You Were Born to be Loved” and her friends spoke in her memory.

Her friends and colleagues have held memorials for Lee every year since her passing. The 2007 event was marked by a music CD released in her name, featuring remastered versions of her cover performance of The Corrs’ “Only When I Sleep” from The Scarlet Letter, as well as tribute performances by her friends in the entertainment industry.
